Idea Capital Award Winners
Celebrating Risk Takers in Film, Visual Art, Literature, Dance

Atlanta (Jan. 2014) -- Now in its seventh year of awarding grants to a diverse group of area artists, Atlanta independent arts funding group Idea Capital announces its latest awards. Nine projects by Atlanta artists working in incredibly diverse media are the winners of nearly $10,000 in awards this year. From graphic novels to paper airplanes, the forms for their expression are unique, though each of this year’s Idea Capital artists are united in their singular imagination and vision. Many of this year’s artists engage directly with the past, looking back at ground-breaking feminist artists like Judy Chicago or The Masses—the magazine voice of radical Greenwich Village bohemia—while forcing us to think about current events through the prism of the past. From house music to drag queens, from the artistic dreams of an obscure Southern writer to American prisoners, many of these artists find inspiration in the shared desire of people to create despite often difficult circumstances.

After careful consideration of 106 entries from Atlanta creatives, Idea Capital selected nine projects by Atlanta artists and collaborative teams to receive a total of almost $10,000. All of the artists who will receive grants from $500 to $1,500 have demonstrated commitment to Ideal Capital’s mission of recognizing the kind of innovative, risk-taking works unlikely to be funded by more traditional revenue streams. Within an Atlanta landscape defined by continuing art gallery closings and cutbacks in arts funding, Idea Capital remains committed to ensuring that the city’s creative class finds opportunities to produce and exhibit their work.

This year’s award recipients are Jonathan Bouknight, DJ lynnée denise, Hester L. Furey and Michael Rovinsky, Juel D. Lane, T. Lang, collaborative Stephanie Pharr, Onur Topal-Sumer and Martha Whittington, Matthew Terrell, Milford Thomas, and Benjamin Wills.
